Who we are: The Florida Sport Horse Club is a club dedicated to Trail Riding and the preservation of the many riding areas in central Florida. We ride every weekend and have many Barbecues and campouts throughout year. We're family oriented and open to all breeds of horses. We are based primarily in Polk County, but have members from all over the state. Where we are: Meetings are held every 3rd Monday of every month at St. Johns United Methodist Church, 1800 Cypress Gardens Boulevard, S. E., Winter Haven. The trail meeting starts around 7:00 pm followed by regular meeting at 7:30 pm. We are based primarily in Polk County, but have members from all over the state. Were dedicated to those who love and enjoy their horses!
Our members have proudly ridden with other organizations on the Osceola Wagon & Trail ride, The Cracker Trail ride, The National Trail ride and in fund raisers for Shriners and St. Jude's. FLORIDA SPORT HORSE CLUB Newsletter For July 2010The next meeting will be Saturday, August 28th (the Annual Meeting) at the residence/farm of Harold Williams, 12550 Old Grade Road, Polk City at 5:00 p.m.; 6:00 p.m.; September meeting will be back on for Monday at 7:00 p.m. September 20th at St. Johns United Methodist on Cypress Gardens Boulevard, Winter Haven. We are looking for volunteers to hold office 2010/2011. If you would like to self-nominate or nominate someone else, please contact me or any club officer. The election will be held at the annual meeting August 28th The current officers are: - Mike Charron, President, 863 670-4727 mike@realpropertyspecialists.com STATE PARK FEES REDUCED: there is no longer any extra equestrian fee to ride in the State Parks in FL -- they have finally listened to trail riders. The only fee will be what it costs an individual to enter the park! This came from SWFTMD employees, Bill and Sweety Bromel – they want to make sure that horse people have gotten the word. MARKING TRAILS: SWFTMD is receptive to marking trails at the Hampton Track. We are asking anyone that has been lost or endured an unpleasant trail ride because of unmarked trails, to let them know by sending feedback to SWFTMD. This feedback could help expedite marking the trails. We may be asked as a club to help but PLEASE, PLASE, please contact them by email to recreation@wattermatters.org. PICNIC TABLE: The club approved providing another picnic table for one of our riding areas. Circle Bar B was suggested but entrance for equestrian use will be moving making this option not as attractive. Gator Creek area was the next suggestion. RIDING LAKE WALES AND SOUTH POLK: Beverly and Jimmy of Yeehaw Junction want members to know they are riding once or twice a week, usually at Walk in the Water and welcome anyone that wants to ride with them, please contact them at email icrane98@earthlink.net or 863 634-9797.

The Yab-Ba-Dabb-A is almost ready for the November Obstacle Challenge. This is the Flintstone looking car with wheels made of barrels that horses can push around. The Florida Foxtrotters club has agreed to sell concessions at this De-sentizing clinic. “Backyard Racehorse:” Members can visit Janet’s web site at www.backyardracehorse.com for more information or get on line and follow her DVD blogs on her horses currently in training at http://backyardracehorse.blogspot.com/ TRIPLE B BUS TOUR: Their annual Bus Tour is August 21 at a cost of $40 for non-members and $35 for members. The pickup point is in Riverview. Donna Fellars will be in the Canadian Rockies in August. Barbara Lassiter and Judy Cloninger will both participate in the Black Prong Versatility Clinic on September 18. They both have several other trips planned including Florida’s Bryson City and Bucksnort, Tennessee as well as a trip to attend “Road to the Horse” the last week in February in Murphysboro, Tennessee. Debbie Parsons has traveled across the country with her horse Boomer to California with her truck and trailer to participate in the Famous 100 Mile Tevis Endurance Ride on Saturday, July 24th. This is where the first official endurance ride was held trying to replicate challenges of the famous Pony Express riders. This event is difficult as it has desert, steep, narrow hillsides and rocky mountainous terrain. I just learned via the Tevis Website that 60 of the 100 plus riders were pulled at some point but Debbie Parsons successfully completed the 100 mile ride. Lori Shank, DVM, is a new member is seeing equine patients for routine care (with limited on-call availability) and has had some success doing acupuncture on horses. You can contact her at 863-605-9235 HORSEMEN’S TIPS Fleas have been a big problem for my dogs and cats. Since purchasing several products recently and not having good results, at the vets office I was told that the former “vet only” flea products are now being sold everywhere and may no longer be as effective because dosage for the largest of animals has to be watered down to safely use on small animals. You may want to consult your vet before spending money on the now over-the-counter flea products. Several members commented that they have been using Janet Delcastillo’s bug spray; and report it works pretty good. The spray consists of Pine Sol mixed in with water. The dilution varies; Donna Fellars says she used ½ cup Pine Sol to 4 cups water. ADVERTISEMENT:
